The FEAR Factor

Isn’t it strange how some book characters can still manage to unnerve you years after you’ve read their story.. catching you off guard when you least expect it.. sending shivers down your spine... eeek! Well, this week on Facebook we got people chatting about book characters that inspired their childhood night terrors.. and the results were quite interesting.

While nowadays children are being petrified by the unending evils of snake talking, merciless  ‘Lord Voldemort’ or the eye-sewing, kidnapping antics of the ‘Other Mother’ in Neil Gaiman’s ‘Coraline’... old fogies who predated the Harry Potter craze didn’t get off scot-free when it came to bed time scares!  Amongst our many responses, Roald Dahl’s ghastly ‘Grand High Witch’ came up trumps - although we’re pretty sure the horrific movie representation may have had something to do with this... was she ugly or what?! Otherwise, killer clowns and freaky dolls were the talk of the day with Stephen King’s ‘Pennywise’ and the terrorizing fiend ‘Chucky’ from ‘Child’s Play’ leaving their resounding mark on bookworms across the country. It appears that the crafty and cunning ‘White Queen’ from the ‘Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’ or indeed the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’ weren’t so easily forgotten either!

With horror book shops popping up around the country, it seems that there’s a big following of fear fanatics.. thriving on the adrenaline rush that comes with being frightened. Are you a person who likes a good scare.. enjoys the fear factor? We’d love to know which villainous book character keeps you awake -or did so when you were a child! Who gets your vote for ‘Chief Terrifier’? Thanks to vivid imaginations and great writing, we’re sure children will be demanding under bed ‘monster’ inspections for many moons to come!

Take our poll and come and join the discussion on our new Facebook page and let’s see which dastardly baddie bags the top spot!
