Evanna Lynch, aka Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, officially launched the 2011 MS READaTHON in The Winding Stair Bookshop/Restaurant in Dublin today. We were also joined by a host of fabulous authors; Sarah Webb, Judy May Murphy, Marisa Mackle, Claudia Carroll, Oisin McGann and Derek Landy. All our famous friends mingled with the band of kids that came along to the launch, posed for photographs and signed books.

The themes for this year’s campaign are ‘Reading Isn’t Alien’ and ‘Go Rockets for Reading’. The kids got into the spirit of things and got their faces painted like aliens for photographs. Juliette from Genie Mackers did a great job entertaining the kids with a wonderful magic show. And lots of goodies were provided for people to eat and drink.

This year we were also joined by the O’Regan family from Clonmel. 10 year old Abigail is an ambassador for the MS READaTHON. Abigail’s mum was diagnosed with MS 10 years ago. Abigail and her family are helping MS Ireland to create awareness of MS and describe what it’s like to live with MS in your family. Read more about Abigail and her family.

Speaking at the event Evanna encouraged kids and schools throughout Ireland to get involved in the MS READaTHON,

“I did the MS READaTHON when I was in school and really loved it. I was and still am a big reader and I think there is nothing better that losing yourself in a book and creating the story within your imagination. With the MS READaTHON you get to read wonderful books but also you are raising money for people with MS. MS Ireland are really good at providing services for over 8,000 families living with MS and they need the money to run their care centre, their home visit service, counseling and their information line, among others.”

We had loads of media popping in to photograph and film the launch so you’ll see lots more of us on the TV in the coming weeks.

Sign Up to the MS READaTHON today! Schools can sign up various classes and receive a whole pile of benefits and individuals can sign up themselves and get lots of goodies too!

Get readin’ and raisin’ everyone!

Big thank you to Evanna and all our authors; the Winding Stair restaurant for giving us the venue; Innocent Smoothies for donating drinks; McVitie’s for donating cookies; Juliette in Genie Mackers for the face painting and entertainment; Jamie, Cathy, Dee and all their kids; the O’Regan Family; and everyone who came along to celebrate the launch.
